What Is an EMDR Intensive? (And Is It Right for You?)

Traditional therapy usually means one session a week, for months or sometimes years. For a lot of people, that pace works well. For others — especially those who are highly motivated, in a time crunch, or simply want to move through something difficult without dragging it out — weekly 50-minute sessions can start to feel like taking a single sip of water when what you really need is to drink from the glass.

That's where an EMDR Intensive comes in.

What an EMDR Intensive Actually Is

An EMDR Intensive condenses the kind of trauma processing work that might normally happen over many weekly sessions into a shorter, more concentrated timeframe — often afew extended sessions over one or several days, rather than 50 minutes here and there. The extra time allows us to fully process a memory or experience in one sitting, rather than getting partway through and having to "put it back on the shelf" until next week.

For many clients, this continuity actually makes the work feel more manageable, not less.

There's no reopening a difficult memory only to pause right in the middle of it.

Why the Extra Time Matters

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) works by helping the brain fully process a memory that got "stuck" — often because it happened during a moment of high stress, when the brain wasn't able to file it away normally. That processing takes as long as it takes. In a standard 50-minute session, we sometimes only get partway before time runs out, and both starting and stopping mid-process take up part of the time we do have.

An intensive removes that pressure. We can go at the pace the material actually needs, follow it all the way through, and use the additional time for grounding, integration, and rest afterward — not just cram in a bit more talking

Who Tends to Choose an Intensive

People with a demanding schedule who can't easily commit to weekly sessions but can carve out a focused block of time

People who've done some therapy already and are ready to go deeper on a specific memory or experience

People preparing for a major life transition and wanting to clear something first.People who find that starting and stopping a difficult memory every week is more distressing than working through it in a longer, supported block

People who live outside a major metro area and prefer to do concentrated work periodically rather than commute weekly (a real advantage of the telehealth format)

What to Expect

Every intensive is customized. Before we begin, we'll spend time on preparation — making sure you have solid grounding and coping tools in place — so the processing itself happens in a supported, paced way, not all at once with no scaffolding.

Afterward, we build in time for integration, so you're not left to process alone once the extended session ends.

Is an Intensive the Right Fit?

An EMDR Intensive isn't the right format for everyone, and that's a conversation worth having to gether before committing. If you're curious whether this accelerated approach fits your situation, timeline, or the specific experience you're hoping to work through, I'd be glad to talk it over.
